One day a week we travel from our village to our “Hub site” or group site. On this day we get to see the other volunteers in Heath Education and English Education. During our sessions we review policies and safety practices, participate in discussions about diversity and gender equality as well as get medical shots and culture lessons.
On our first hub site day and after only a few days of separation, we were all very excited to see each other. Even though we had only known each other for a few days, it already seemed like a life time.
To get to our hub site, we have to take a “rutiera”. The rutieras run between villages and are shuttle type vehicles. The difficult part can be that as many people as possible cram into the the bus and at times, some of the older women may ask to close the windows even in the heat of summer. (There is a belief that any blowing air can cause sickness.) Many of the rutiera stops have painted shelters; I think a local teacher had her students paint them recently. It is now on my list to take more photos of them as they are beautiful.
